China’s plan to re-open its border areas will help Cambodia’s economy and tourism

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen said that China’s plan to reopen the border areas will help Cambodia’s economy and tourism.

He said that if Chinese tourists visit Cambodia, they will be warmly welcomed.

China plans to reopen its border areas on January 8. Cambodia is the most popular tourist destination for Chinese tourists, he said at the groundbreaking ceremony of the Mekong River Bridge, which was built with Chinese support.

He said that when China reopens its border areas, air travel will increase, and about two million Chinese travelers may enter Cambodia in 2023.

Tourism is one of the industries that contribute to Cambodia’s economy.

Before the outbreak of the Covid-19 disease in Cambodia, 6.6 million international tourists, including 2.36 million Chinese tourists, visited the country in 2019, and the tourism industry earned US$4.92 billion.

Cambodia is famous for its three World Heritage Sites, namely the Angkor Ancient Civilization Site in Siem Reap Province; Prawihia Temple in Prawihia Province and Sambor Prei Kuk Ancient Cultural Site in Kampong Thom Province.
